“EGG and NEST”, by Rosamond Purcell, Linnea S. Hall, and René Corado, published by Harvard University Press, October 2008. (Hardback, 224 pp., $39.95 each, AUTOGRAPHED BY THE AUTHORS, plus S&H).
Just published by Harvard University Press, the WFVZ proudly announces its beautiful new book celebrating the ornithological collections of the WFVZ, intended to please both the layperson and the expert alike. It features more than 175 spectacular photographs by Rosamond Purcell, whose collaborations with Stephen Jay Gould and her own books are well known to natural history enthusiasts. Each plate is also captioned by WFVZ staff members Dr. Linnea S. Hall and Mr. René Corado with collection data and background information. The text both entertains and informs the reader about bird anatomy, conservation, ecology, and physiology, as well as provides historical information on the specimens pictured. A general introduction is provided by biologist Bernd Heinrich, followed by an introduction to the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology by Linnea and René. This section includes a history of the Foundation and of its founder, Ed N. Harrison, as well as a brief history of the practice of oology. The concluding essay in the book is a poetic piece by the photographer.
