Our Volunteers...
Dr.
Hall & Volunteer Peg Stevens at the Int'l Migratory
Bird Day Fair.
Volunteers are an important part
of the Western Foundation. Their efforts help us grow and help
us serve researchers and others in the community. They also
have an opportunity to experience things that many people don’t,
like fieldwork, museum work, and getting up close to bird study
skins from around the world! Recently, our volunteers were busy
pricing and organizing natural history & duplicate bird
books from our library for our fundraising sale. They worked
for over 2 months pricing and cataloging over 600 books!
Past and current
projects include:
*Checking the bird study skins
for bugs
*Preparing study skins
*Entering study skin/teaching collection data
*Reorganizing the broken egg collection
*Cataloging and shelving library books
*Computerizing the library book
collection Eddie & René Corado prepare study
skins.
*Entering and shelving library
journals
*Assisting with tours
*Photocopying requested journal articles
*Assisting at outreach events such as fairs and expos
*Reorganizing and computerizing the fieldnotes collection
*Entering reprint articles into the database
*Reorganizing the map collection

To
say thanks for all their hard work, Dr. Linnea Hall hosted a
songbird identification workshop for the WFVZ volunteers on
Oct 2nd. The session focused specifically on local and vagrant
warblers, vireos, and some flycatchers. These species can be
particularly difficult to I.D. because of their similarity in
appearance and quick movements. Male, female, & juvenile
specimens from the main collection were used so the volunteers
could study the morphological differences closely and become
more familiar with plumage variations within and between species.
Thirteen volunteers attended and René Corado showed up
to lend a hand. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot
about these tricky birds. The WFVZ will host more I.D. workshops
as well as other events for our volunteers in the future. Thanks
again volunteers for all your hard work & dedication!
If you are interested in becoming
a WFVZ volunteer, please call or email us! Right now we especially
need someone with website experience who could help with the
updates to our site, but anyone who likes birds and wants to
contribute their time and energy is welcome!
