Group Tours by Appointment
The WFVZ gives school tours on a by-appointment basis for students from 4th grade through college. (Click here for a printable school tour flyer) We also give tours to civic groups and the general public. Information presented on school and group tours dovetails with California Science Standards so that teachers (and parents!) can make it fit with their students’ education requirements. Subjects such as bird biology, biodiversity, and ecology are covered, as well as fun facts about the birds of the world. The collection materials are always popular with students and the general public, and are key to being able to teach about natural science. For all Group Tours, we request a $5 per person donation, although for low-income school groups this fee may be waived. If you are interested in arranging such a special tour of the Foundation, please contact us at least 2 months in advance.
Scheduled Public Tours
Public Tours are held the second Wednesday of each month at 3:30 and the last Friday of every month at 3 pm. Public tours are limited to 20 people; please call at least 1 day in advance to get on the waiting list. The fee is $5 per person for these tours, FREE for Members!
The Foundation makes teaching material loans, for free, to local educators (4th grade and up), and has background information covering 5 avian science topics available to accompany them.
Classes and Training
The WFVZ also offers training in study skin and egg preparation and curation, and has internships available for upper-division college undergraduate and graduate students. Foundation staff also offer classes in ornithology and zoology to professional biologists, students, and the general public. Please contact us if you are interested in any of these courses, and see the newest information on our upcoming "Introduction to Ornithology" course!
